What is Teen Court?
Alternative, voluntary program, which offers youth offenders an opportunity to make amends through community service, jury service, and skills groups, thus avoiding fines and keeping the youth’s record clear.
What happens if a youth doesn’t complete the program?
The case will be referred to Juvenile Court for prosecution. The State Attorney may file formal charges, and the youth will be required to appear in Juvenile Court and may end up with a criminal record.
When and where are the sessions located?
Wake County Courthouse (316 Fayetteville St)—enter through Salisbury St entrance.
Check-in is between 5:15pm and 5:50pm, as court starts at 6pm. You should expect to be with us until 8pm or a bit longer based on how many cases we have that evening.
Are these cases real?
Yes. All Teen Court cases are real misdemeanor cases that we receive from law enforcement, schools, loss prevention, etc.
Common offenses include shoplifting, affray, trespassing, and underage possession of drugs/alcohol.
What do I wear?
Take a look at the dress code below. Keep in mind that Teen Court is held in an actual courtroom. Please try and look professional!
Can anyone observe Teen Court hearings?
If you have not talked to the Volunteer Coordinator, you cannot attend court. We require strict confidentiality for the participants present, so they must be cleared before attending court.
How old do I need to be to volunteer?
Mature youth, ages 12-18. Must be enrolled in middle or high school.
All adults (18+) are welcome to
apply.
I have registered to be a volunteer, now what?
You can attend a Teen Court session when your schedule allows (as long as you are registered for the court session)! Sign up on Volgistics or email the Volunteer Coordinator.
Do parents need to attend with a volunteer?
No, but they are welcome to wait in the lobby outside the courtrooms if they would like.
Can I bring my phone into the courthouse?
Yes—you can bring your phone, but if you are a Juror, it will be collected by the Jury Monitor before the first case begins, returned between cases if requested, and given back once court concludes.
